intricate supports for the arches / the window where the abbot lectured

There are a number of tombs inside, ranging from simple stone slabs to fabulous stone carvings. One tomb has sculptures of the crucifixion, and the apostle John. Ine some cases, windows and arches were blocked up to allow the building of these ornate tombs. But it is the surrounding courtyard that is interesting -- during the famine thousands of people were buried in the churchyard, in graves so full that they began to bulge upward. Eventually, the ground level in the courtyard rose so far that it nearly tops the walls in some places. It was the official catholic burial place in Sligo since the 14th century. It was officilaly closed to new burials in 1895.
