the broken cross

There are a number of sites to see in town -- walking from one to the other is rather nice, and passes a few tea shops. The four crosses in the churchyard are wonderful exaples of the High crosses that are seen all over Ireland, and just up the road is a strange little stacked-stone building called St. Columba's House (it's very much like the Gallarus Oratory). THe small building sits in a walled lot.

It's worth visiting the Heritage Center at the bottom of the hill for information about the Heritage Walk through Kells and a view of the Market Cross, moved here after it was hit by a bus not too long ago. The Market Cross was once used as a gallows, which seems an odd use for a religious symbol, but who knows.
