The church itself is a long rectangular building, with a stone screen between the nave and the choir (where the friars sat). As the priory grew, the church was enlarged and a transept was added, as well as aisles for larger congregations. Remember that our modern view of a church, with rows and rows of pews, dd not exist in medieval churches: congregants stood for the entire service. Only those who could afford to buy their own seats and build choir stalls had a chance to sit. The tower, which has mostly fallen, was added during the reconstruction in 1423.
