  Prev Pharaoh Next Pharaoh

Dynasty Notes

The 31st Dynasty is also known as the Second Persian Period, as it encompasses the three kings taken from the Persian invaders of Egypt. The first, Artaxerxes was murdered by his own general and his son put upon the throne. The last, Darius III was driven from Egypt by Alexander the Great.

In between, Egypt was an occupied country and many records indicate that it was oppressed and violent during these times.

During at least the rule of Arses (from 338-336) an Egyptian "pharaoh" also made claim to the throne, but he did so from hiding, and was barely mentioned by any documentation. His name, Khabebesh, may be Libyan, and he was supported only by a few in Upper Egypt and never really reigned over the country. it is likely that there were other pretenders to the throne at this time.

The kings of this dynasty are all Persian:

Artaxerxes III Ochus
Arses
Darius III Codomannus

These were the last Persian rulers of Egypt. After this, it was Greco-Roman all the way.
