travelogue

Dublin was once a walled city (well, most cities were walled at some point -- see Athenry) and in today's modern city, only a few tiny reminders of the stone ramparts remain. The only remaining gate is just past St. Audoen's Church and is called (obviously) St. Audoen's Arch. The section of the wall here stretches for about two hundred yards, and it has been carefully restored with battlements and arches to show how the wall would have looked when built by the Normans in the 13th century.

We walked down from the church to see the gates, and then on around the outside of the walls and back to Christ Church Cathedral.
