The tower here, right outside of the gates to Mellifont Abbey, was likely built after the monastery was dissolved in the 1560s. The vaulted opening at ground level is actually part of the original tower vaulted basement, but the majority of the tower has collapsed. There is a staircase in the attached tower (you can still see a few of the steps. Across the road there is evidence of earthworks that were probably part of the original monastery.
