remains of the tower house in wicklow

Just a short walk from Wicklow Gaol is yet another Black Castle. This one sits on a tiny rock and has almost completely disappeared. There is a motte a little ways away, which has the remains of a wooden fortress, but it's likely that the site was abandoned in favor of this rocky outcrop -- probably by the Vikings in the 9th century. There is no mention of the castle until 1174 after the Norman invasion. It was burned and rebuilt several times in up through the 17th century.
