You can just see the tiny butt-end of our car peeking out at the left, to give a sense of scale to this huge rectangular tower. Ballinoroher was built some time around 1611 by the MacCarthy family. There are four levels to the tower, the lower two with fireplaces. A spiral stair in the northeast corner leads to the upper floors. The stiars are long gone, of course, but at least one website notes that the upper stories can be reached by a ladder. We didn't risk it.

The castle is on the south bank of the Argideen river. It is in fairly good condition despite attempts to find a rumored "treasure" hidden by the owners during the Cromwell years.
