Titulary
Nekau II is credited with begriming the canal from the Nile to the Red Sea (which was completed by Darius I) and for embarking on an expedition to circumnavigate Africa. This is according to Herodotus, of course, so take that as you will. Like his father, he supported the Assyrians against Babylon and during his reign reestablished Egyptian rule over Palestine. In 601 BCE, he repelled the force of Babylon and took control of Gaza during his reign. Most modern historians believe that the story of his circumnavigation of Africa is false and that the documentation (in the form of Scarabs) are modern forgeries. When he died in May, 594 BCE, he left the throne to his son, Psamtek II. |
