History

Psamtek III was the last king of the 26th Dynasty. He ruled only a few months before he was defeated by the Persians and eventually executed by the founder of the 27th Dynasty, Cambyses.

He was initially betrayed by one of his allies (Phanes of Helicarnas) and defeated by the Persian army and forced to retreat to Memphis. The city lay under siege for many months and was finally surrendered. Psamtek III continued to raise rebellions against the conquerors and Cambyses had him killed.
