History

When Tutankhamun died at the age of sixteen or seventeen (and under suspicious circumstances if the evidence is correct) one of his chancellors and advisors, Ay, took the throne. Ay was the brother of Queen Tiye. He may have been an uncle to the boy-kingTutankhamun.

Whether he was an unscrupulous, power-hungry murderer or simply the best qualified of the possible contenders to the throne is not known.

His tomb, in the rarely-visited western valley of the Valley of the Kings, is similar to Tutankhamun's and is a blend of royal and noble imagery. A frieze of baboons is strikingly similar to those in his predecessors tomb. However, a mummy for this pharaoh has never been found.
