Dynasty Notes

The third dynasty marks the evolution of pyramid building with the emergence of Djoser's Step Pyramid and complex, built by the architect Imhotep. Based on the mastaba-tombs of the previous dynasties, Djoser and Imhotep built a huge "stacked mastaba" in Saqqara. Throughout the third dynasty, the stepped-pyramid shape was built, leading to the burst of innvoation in the Dynasty IV with Sneferu's Red Pyramid and Bent pyramids eventually leading us to Giza.

The kings in Dynasty III, other than Djoser, as not well-known. In fact, one of them was a complete mystery intil the 1950s when a second step pyramid complex was discovered in Saqqara for the pharaoh Sekhemkhet.
