The castle lies on property that was once owned by the Greyfriars Monastery, and was bought by Sir Thomas Maclellan in 1569. He destroyed most of the monastery, leaving only the chapel (now a local church) and building the castle on the lands.
In 1633, they were made Lords of Kirkubright. Debts forced them out of the castle in 1752, selling it to Robert Maxwell, who then sold it to the Douglases in 1782. It was reported as roof-less as early as 1752, but avoided being used as a quarry for the next century and a half.
In 1912 it was given over to state care, and is maintained by Historic Scotland.
