Tomb of Panhesy

Penhesy was a high priest, and his tomb is quite ornate compared to the others. It's about 500 meters south along the cliff, so it is often skipped.

It has a decorative facade, and the interior has been radically changed by Copts who transformed it into a chapel. There is a spiral stair down to an underground sarcophagus chamber whicn contains many fragments of pottery. One of the guards gave me a piece and assured me I could take it -- I had our guide politely explain that I simply couldn't take it, but thank you very much.

It is likely that there was a Coptic village here on the cliff side -- a number of excavations have revealed remains of pottery and houses from the medieval period.
