This is one of the standard overtures and is well worth your consideration as it will always be a standard overture, and as such will be worthy of a place on any musical programme. It begins with a slow 6/8 movement in a quiet way.
"Andante" means "somewhat slow and sedate." It begins with one starting note (the 6th count) an up bow. Count: 1-2-3-4-5-6- to each measure, one for every possible 8th note 2 for a quarter, 3 for a dotted quarter. Pay attention to the slurs and the bowing marks. Rit. means ritard the movement (slower). At the beginning of the 3rd staff, the note F has a small half circle over it with a dot under the circle. This is called d a pause or hold, and indicates that the note must be held longer than its own time value. This does not mean that ty9ou count more than 3, but you count slower or delay the counting. There is also a pause over the rest with prolongs the silence; there are also 2 more pauses at the begriming of the following movement (beginning at the 4th measure of the 4th staff) which have the same meaning. Here the time changes to common time which is the same as 4/4 time, also changes from slow 6/8 time to fast common time. Allegro means lively; the lively motion begins with the 8th note following the last pause on last half of 2nd count. You will now have to count by groups, one count for two 8th notes or four 16th. Notice that the 8th notes are all staccato and the 16th notes are slurred (legato). The small "o" over some of the notes indicates that such notes must be played on an open string. The meaning of "f" is loud- ff means very loud- fz means "forced"- p means softly- dolce means softly, sweetly- crescendo means gradually swell the sound to loud. Piano accompaniment to this overture may be had in a collection containing several other pretty pieces, with extra first violin parts the price of which is 50 cents. This piece counts as two lessons. N.B. When writing always mention instrument. Confine your questions to ONE LESSON ONLY. Give name of lesson, number of staff, number of measure, and be brief. Give full name and address. |
