Andantino con moto means slow, but not quite as slow as andantino. Rit. means ritard, slower. THe little half circle with a dot under it (which resembles a bird's eye) is a pause and means to prolong the note more than its usual count. A tempo means to resume the original time - p dolce means softly and sweetly - mf means moderately loud- f means loud. The wedge-like lines when pointed to the right mean to decrease the sound from loud to softly, and when pointed to the left to increase the sound for soft to loud- pp means very softly. the short sign like an arrow head placed over a note means ACCENT that note- a "v" means up bow.
This Fantasia beings with an introduction consisting of slurred 16th notes in 3/4 time similar to some of our scale studies heretofore, therefore needs little or no instruction except to remind you to use full length bow for each measure, and to play the 5th and 6th measures with one length of the bow divided into 6 down strokes (slurred staccato) which begin loud and gradually decrease in sound and at the same time decrease in time ending with a pause very softly. When begin the theme of "The Last Rose of Summer" which should be played with expression and as much like voice as possible. At first you will not try to play any of the grace notes; just omit them until you have the rest of the piece learned by heart, and they may be put in as embellishments or ornaments. A grace note has not time value, but teaks what little time that is needed for its execution form the note which comes after it. Pay particular attention to the slurs and count the time very carefully and above all things don't rush the time. The small circles over the notes resembling the letter "o" mean to play open strings. The figure 4 means that the 4th finger must be used. Other instructions on this lesson are deemed unnecessary as the pupil has been carefully drilled on similar work heretofore. N.B. When writing always mention instrument. Confine your questions to ONE LESSON ONLY. Give name of lesson, number of staff, number of measure, and be brief. Give full name and address. |
