Hills Castle
I had absolutely no idea that this was actually a huge castle -- I just spied the end gable and snapped a single picture, thinking it was just another ruined end-cap sitting in a farm yard. Nope!

The tower has four storeys and an attic, with a large two story house attached, and a courtyard and gatehouse. Who'd have known? It's screened by trees, and I didn'd have my handy-dandy Salter book. Hmph!
Ownership
The castle belonged to the Maxwells, who were made Earls of Nithsdale. In the mid-17th century, it passed by marriage to the MacCullochs.
