Freswick Castle
on the caithness shore
12th Century Tower
Thie is actually referred to as Freswick House -- the other ruin called Freswick Castle is a dangerous slip of stone on the coast just a little ways from this 17th century house (although the castle was built on much older foundations, being on the site of a 12th century Viking settlement. )
The main tower is five storeys, and has a square stair tower projecting from one side. It was extended in the 18th century.
Ownership
A Viking settlement here in the 12th century was ruled over by Svein Asleifarson, who built a longhouse here. The lands were ownd by his stepson,
The Mowats built the original Freswick Castle (also called Bucholly Castle) in the early 15th century. That castle was replaced by the house on this site, which was sold to the Sinclairs in 1661.
It was remodeled in 1791, and is still occupied. It is currently th ehome of the Wayfarer Trust, a community of artists.
