Titulary
Taharqa is considered the most important of the Napata (Nubian) kings in Egypt. He was a prolific builder and fierce military leader. Although, it must be admitted that the Assyrian kings regained power during his reign, conquered Thebes, and forced the king to flee to the south. Ok, maybe he wasn't such a fierce military leader. He succeeded the throne after his brother, Shebitku, died. At the time, Shebitku had waged strong resistance against the Assyrians in the north. However, they were successful in capturing Memphis and in the battle, wounded Taharqa and kidnapped his family. He survived the attack, but fled to Nubia. He regained the rule over the Delta in 699 BCE. Taharqa is responsible for the colonnaded court at the Temple of Amun in Karnak, of which a single column, standing 21 meters, remains. He built temples in Sanam, Kawa, Atribis, Pnubs, Semna, Kasr Ibrim, and in the Theban district. It is probably that he was buried not in Thebes, but in Nuri in a pyramid tomb with his name inscribed. A mummy of a 50 year old man was found there as well. |
